MCS Members: Access the Updated Fee Schedule
WPS Medicare has released the 2025 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule. Variations from 2024 include slight changes, with deductions increasing by a little over 1 percent.
Meanwhile, according to CMS, the Medicare Economic Index—a government measure of inflation in medical practice costs—projects an increase of 3.5 percent in 2025. This follows last year’s 4.6 percent, the highest this century, and a 3.8 percent rise in 2023. Additionally, data from the AMA shows that after adjusting for inflation, Medicare payments to physicians have declined 29% from 2001 to 2024.

Efforts for a Congressional Fix Continue!
The MCS and national organizations are closely monitoring congressional efforts to address this significant issue. Payment reductions, especially when combined with medical inflation, threaten patient access to care. Many physicians may be forced to limit the number of Medicare patients they see or even stop accepting Medicare patients entirely. Massachusetts’ seniors on Medicare deserve better.
In early October, a bipartisan majority of the U.S. House of Representatives signed a letter to House leadership, urging the use of the year-end spending package to protect physicians from these payment cuts. Members of Congress, including several representing Massachusetts, were among the 233 signees. Potential fixes include H.R. 10073, which proposes a 4.73 percent payment increase.
A Long-Term Solution Still Needed
Physicians remain the only providers who do not receive automatic inflation updates in the fee schedule.
While short-term solutions like H.R. 10073 are a step in the right direction, the ongoing cuts to the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule and rising practice costs make it clear that Congress must end this cycle of temporary fixes and implement permanent, long-term Medicare payment reform.
